Nuovo Cinema Paradiso ****

A famous film director returns home to a Sicilian village for the first time after almost 30 years. He reminisces about his childhood at the Cinema Paradiso where Alfredo, the projectionist, first brought about his love of films. He is also reminded of his lost teenage love, Elena, who he had to leave before he left for Rome.

A prominent man stopped talking last night, for 60 seconds, due to complications of losing his soul mate and holding on to her memory the last 5 years. He was 37 years old. Soft-spoken and obsessive, he never looked the part of a hopeless romantic. But, in the final moments of this posting, he revealed an unknown side of his psyche. This hidden quasi-Jungian persona surfaced during the Agatha Christie-like pursuit of his long-reputed soul mate, a woman whom he only spent a few precious hours with; talking with her, kissing her and had felt her “god-like” touch. Sadly, the protracted search ended late Monday night in complete and utter failure. Yet even in certain defeat, the courageous man secretly clung to the belief that life is not merely a series of meaningless accidents or coincidences. Uh-uh. But rather, its a tapestry of events that culminate in an exquisite, sublime plan. Asked about why his friend stopped talking for “60 seconds” his dear friend, Giuseppe Tornatore, the Grand Prize of the Jury -winning Director, described this man as a changed person. "Things were clear for him," Tornatore noted. Ultimately he said, "if we are to live life in harmony with the universe, we must all possess a powerful faith in what the ancients used to call "fatum", what we currently refer to as destiny."
