High Brow Madness

David Altmejd

A up and coming artist whose work I had the privilege to see in London a few months ago, David Altmejd mixes taxidermy, sculpture and various other areas of "art" into his pieces.
The altogether violent effect this has upon the viewer is somewhat like a slap in the face, for his often towering structures are like materialization of some strange drug induced dream, or perhaps the view in a kaleidoscope magically made gargantuanly real.
The variety in his work can only be matched by, in my view, the variety in his message. Do his dissected humans with crystals "growing" like some sort of disease have any particular meaning?
I am certain that some irony or pun is intended, which eludes me, but i prefer to analise the sheer aesthetic impact of his surreal work
Opinions on his work vary from the grotesque to the beautiful.
Mine rests firmly on the latter.
